Hometown Grocery buys local Piggly Wiggly

Hometown Grocery will soon have two locations to serve Limestone County. The grocer, with a 31-year background in Athens, plans to take over a second store full of history.

Owners announced Friday they acquired Piggly Wiggly at 100 U.S. 31 in Athens through a bid made by Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. Plans are to open the second location Thursday.

AWS of Nashville, Tenn., submitted the winning bid Tuesday during Belle Foods bankruptcy auction. Piggly Wiggly in Athens will be turned over to Randall Holloway, James Johns and Jason Holloway of Hometown Grocery.

“We will now have two locations to serve Limestone County,” Randall Holloway said. “We are very excited to get started.”

Hometown Grocery on Jefferson Street has been in business since 1982. The grocery was in the old A&P building near Dub’s Burgers before moving to the present location.

Holloway said the store on Jefferson Street and the one on U.S. 31 are about the same size (more than 40,000 square feet).

“We plan to sell the same products at both locations,” he said, adding owners also plan to keep the deli, bakery and alcohol sales at the new location. “We are not going to make a lot of changes. The new location has a rich history and does a good job. We plan to pick up all the good things and add some flare of our own including lower prices and more merchandise.”

Plans are also to keep a majority of Piggly Wiggly employees at the new Hometown. Owners said they would talk to employees Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hometown Grocery on U.S. 31 will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday for inventory and will re-open at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Hours of operation will be 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week. Darell Lee, the manager of Hometown Grocery on Jefferson Street, will be handling pricing and merchandising at both stores.

“Give us a chance,” Holloway said. “We plan to keep the products, service and friendliness and hopefully, we will earn your business.”
