Hundreds turn out for flu shot clinic

Drivers of hundreds of vehicles lined up for flu shots Wednesday at the Sportsplex in Athens.

The inoculations were administered to 564 people by officials from the Limestone County Health Department and student nurses from Wallace State Community College.

The Limestone County Health Department, at 20371 Clyde Mabry Drive, will continue to have flu shots as long as their doses last. There is no charge for Medicare and Medicaid recipients and $2 for all others. The health department is open from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are suggested, but not required. Call 256-232-3200 for more information.

The Centers for Disease Control advise people ages 6 months and older to obtain a yearly vaccine to prevent pandemic flu, ideally by October.

Flu activity most commonly peaks in the United States in January or February, according to the Centers for Disease Control. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May, the CDC says.

Manufacturers have produced nearly 139 million doses of vaccine for this year’s flu season.
