More police presence on the roads this weekend

— Motorists traveling through Athens and the state during Memorial Day weekend can expect to see a higher presence of police and state troopers.

Alabama officials announced the extra troopers are the result of the state participating in the nationwide Click It Or Ticket campaign to increase the use of seat belts. Many of the state’s city and county law enforcement agencies are also participating.

The state Department of Transportation is anticipating heavy traffic and says it won’t have any temporary lane closures on interstate highways through midnight Monday. The department also said road construction and maintenance work will be limited during the busy holiday weekend.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said more officers will be out in force this weekend. More patrol cars will be seen in high-density areas, he said, while officers may also be conducting roadblocks in lower traffic areas.

“We’ll be working in staggered shifts and on the lookout for traffic violators,” he said. “Being in multiple areas, more people will see us.”

— The Associated Press contributed to this report.
