Clements teacher wins primary for D-3 commissioner

ATHENS — Clements High School teacher Jason Black unofficially won the District 3 Limestone County Commission race during Tuesday night’s Republican primary, advancing to face unopposed Democrat James “Curtis” Turner in the Nov. 4 general election.

Black received 991 votes, or 50.2 percent, among 10 of 11 boxes counted Tuesday. The 11th box is for provisional ballots, which are counted after the night of the primary.

“I am very excited about winning. I was slightly disappointed in the number of voters that actually came out to vote in Limestone County,” Black said. “I thank my opponents for running an honest and open race. I’m looking forward to representing my party in the general election.

“I would really like to thank my family for putting up with me during stressful times and during irritable moments.”

Adam Hutchins, a father of 11, was less than 300 votes behind Black with 708, or 35.9 percent. Hollis Hogan, the county’s former sheriff, got 275 votes, or 13.9 percent.

Black won eight boxes, capturing 203 votes at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church and 154 at Clements Baptist Church.

Hutchins won two boxes, including 168 votes from the Lamb of God Lutheran Church voting center.

The District 3 commission seat is held by Bill Latimer, who chose not to run for re-election.
