County approves $33K incentive package for Carpenter

ATHENS — The Limestone County Commission voted 2-1 during Tuesday’s meeting, approving $33,000 in incentives for the second plant being built at Carpenter Technology in Tanner.

Commissioners Steve Turner and Gary Daly voted yes, while Commissioner Ben Harrison voted no. Commissioner Bill Latimer was absent to attend a National Association of Resource Conservation and Development conference.

Harrison voted against the package because it includes incentives beyond infrastructure improvements. He said it is unfair to provide additional incentives to certain companies.

“My position should be well-known by this point. I don’t have a problem providing infrastructure, but I don’t think it’s fair to provide cash and other (incentives),” he said.

Carpenter, which started operations at the $518 million specialty alloy plant in January, is planning to construct another plant in a former Delphi building beginning this fall. The $20 million facility will manufacture superalloy powder for industries such as aerospace.

To receive the incentives, Carpenter must hire 25 employees for the new plant by the end of 2019, and 50 total workers by the end of 2031.
