3 charged with drug trafficking

A routine traffic stop turned into a trafficking bust Tuesday afternoon for a Limestone County Sheriff’s deputy.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said one of his officers stopped the driver of a BMW who had been speeding on Mooresville Road near Belle Mina.

“When the officer approached, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming out of the vehicle,” the sheriff said. “Upon searching it, he found a small amount of marijuana, a syringe, a spoon and 82 ‘Roxies.’” (Roxie is slang for Roxicodone, an instant-release oxycodone painkiller.)

Deputy Josh McLaughlin and Reserve Deputy Jeremy McLaughlin arrested the driver and occupants, including Christopher Douglas Hadden, 33, of Huntsville; Kylie Marie Smith, 21, of Madison; and Kasey Austin Berner, 22, of 25821 Cobblestone Lane in Athens, records show.

Each is charged with one count of trafficking in oxycontin, second-degree possession of marijuana and carrying a pistol without a permit. Berner is additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.  All three remained in the Limestone County Jail Wednesday.

Hadden and Smith are waiting for a judge to set bail on their trafficking charges. No bail will be set for Berner, whose bond was revoked on a previous charge of second-degree theft, records show.
