Thinking pink can(s) make a difference

When the Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation and City of Athens Sanitation Department started selling pink garbage cans in hopes of kicking cancer to the curb, they could only imagine the impact the project would help make locally and for the American Cancer Society.

Since October 2012, proceeds from the pink 96-gallon rolling trash cans, which are ordered by the Athens-Limestone Foundation through Cascade Cart Solutions, have gone toward Athens-Limestone Hospital’s Pink Elephant Fund and to the American Cancer Society.

“The fund allows us to help men and women in Limestone County with mammograms as well as helps purchase new mammography equipment and technology,” Foundation Director Shelli Waggoner said. “When we purchase these cans (which cost $75), Cascade also donates $5 of each can to the American Cancer Society.”

Through the pink trash can project, Cascade has sold 94,870 trash cans across the nation and donated more than $424,154 to the American Cancer Society, according to Waggoner. About 400 pink cans have either been sold or are on order in Limestone County.

“So not only are we helping our neighbors here in Limestone County, but we are helping to make a difference in many people’s lives across the nation,” Waggoner said. “Thank you for your role in making this project successful.”

City residents can show their support by purchasing a pink can. The garbage can works with the city’s automated garbage pickup truck and can be used just like the green garbage cans residents already use. Once a pink can is ordered, it can be delivered to a resident’s home.

County residents can also purchase pink cans, but will have to pick up the can at the city’s Sanitation Department at 1600 W. Elm St. County residents cannot use the can for garbage disposal because the county contracts its garbage pickup and sets specific guidelines. However, county residents can find other uses for the pink can such as storage or to hold items for recycling.

About 20 pink cans are currently available at the Sanitation Department for purchase, according to Glaze. About 200 are on order at this time.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control, Alabama is one of the states in the highest death rate category for breast cancer, so we need to keep finding ways to fund research, education and medical support,” said Holly Hollman, captain of the City of Athens Relay for Life team. “Our city employees have a tradition of supporting Athens-Limestone Hospital’s breast cancer efforts and the efforts of the American Cancer Society to battle all types of cancer. I am proud of our community for their support not only related to the pink garbage can program, but to all our fundraising campaigns.”
