The Board of Trustees welcomed two new deans during its quarterly meeting Friday at Athens State University, with one being a promotion and the other an experienced administrator from within the state’s community college system.
Dr. Kim LaFevor, an associate professor of management at Athens State, was previously announced in November as the College of Business dean and began her new role at the beginning of this semester.
Dr. Pat Sims, formerly dean of instruction at J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College in Huntsville, will begin as ASU’s College of Education dean on Tuesday.
University officials said they used an “intensive” nationwide search to fill the vacancies, ultimately finding the new administrators from within North Alabama.
“Dr. LaFevor is the former chair of the department of human resources management (and department of management) and will be a wonderful addition to our executive leadership,” said Athens State President Dr. Bob Glenn during Friday’s meeting. “Dr. Sims was very involved in the process of elevating Drake … to a community college, and I think she will be a terrific hire.”
LaFevor has been a full-time professor at ASU since 2005, with 22 years of overall teaching experience in higher education. She spent 21 years with General Motors and served as plant personnel director at Saturn-GM Manufacturing in Spring Hill, Tenn., prior to retiring from the company.
Sims had served as dean of instructional and student services at Drake State since 2009 after seven years in the school’s student services division and is a former middle school science teacher, assistant principal and principal with Huntsville City Schools.
