Vietnam veterans honored at City Council meeting

The News Courier

— The Athens City Council commemorated the 39th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War by welcoming area Vietnam veterans to Monday night’s meeting, where they were recognized for their accomplishments.

Mayor Ronnie Marks and council members honored Vietnam veterans with a proclamation naming March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in Athens.

Mayor Ronnie Marks said in a story in Sunday’s News Courier that many veterans didn’t have the opportunity to be welcomed home properly at the war’s end.

Marks, who was drafted into the infantry during the Vietnam War, said he hopes to expand the city’s efforts and have a larger celebration next year in honor of the 40th anniversary of troop withdrawal.

Though the fall of Saigon didn’t occur until April 30, 1975, March 30, 1972 is the date all U.S. combat and support personnel withdrew from Vietnam. Last year, the U.S. Senate designated March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Day.
