Bring back your copper, brass, stainless steel

Recycling Center accepting scrap metal again

— Residents who recycle metal in Athens and Limestone County will no longer have to go to Decatur or Pulaski, Tenn., to unload their recyclables for cash.

Recyclers can once again bring their scrap copper, brass, aluminum and stainless steel to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center, which had stopped accepting non-ferrous metals — other than aluminum cans — on Jan. 1.

Beginning Monday, a private contractor will purchase the metals, said Lynne Hart, executive coordinator of Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful.

Metal Exchange Corp. has sublet space at the recycling center and will begin accepting copper, brass, aluminum and stainless at its grand opening Monday, she said. The company will also extend to two weeks the center’s annual Can Bash — an event in which residents receive a premium price for aluminum cans, Hart said.

This year’s Can Bash will begin Monday and end March 28, she said.
