Resurrection carries special meaning in today’s world

ATHENS —

The celebration of Good Friday and Easter holds great significance especially in this day and age to Christians, according to an Athens State religion professor.

Today is Good Friday, which commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and Easter celebrates Christ’s resurrection.

“It’s the central aspect of the Christian faith,” said Dr. Tony Moyers, chairman of the Religion Department at Athens State. “It’s the source of hope for the future and in general.

“It’s seen as the conquest of good over evil.”

Moyers said today, as in the past, people are faced with challenges.

“But today may be more troublesome,” he said. “The economy, environment, the turmoil in Russia, the Middle East …

“With the challenges we face, it would be easy to become depressed.  But knowing of the power of God, there’s a great source of hope.”

Moyers said Christians today should remain hopeful, in spite of all the uncertainty.

He used the disciples as an example of hope and celebration.

“For the disciples, they thought all had been lost (at the crucifixion),” he said. “But then Christ was resurrected and they celebrated.”

Moyers said when people feel down about the times, they should reflect back on that time and the resurrection is a new birth and new life.

“It’s having a new start in Christ,” he said.  “Think of joy and happiness and the prospects of the future.

“It’s a great time of joy.”
