County applying for 2 vans to aid seniors

— County seniors will have more transportation options if the Alabama Department of Transportation accepts two van applications by the County Commission.

During Monday’s regular meeting, the commission approved moving forward with a request to buy an additional van for the Council on Aging from ALDOT, with a county match of $9,767, or 20 percent of the total cost of $48,836.

The commission held a public hearing to discuss applying for an ALDOT federal transit grant for a van to transport kidney dialysis patients. The “kidney van” would also cost $48,836, with a county match of $9,767.

Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee said the additional vans could be used to transport more residents to the East Limestone and Goodsprings senior centers.

In other business, the commission approved the following:

• a Four-Factor Analysis and Language Analysis Plan for people with limited English proficiency in the community for Community Development Block Grant programs in the county, which is required to receive federal funding for CDBG grant programs;

• re-appointing Helen Carter to a six-year term on the North Central Alabama Mental Retardation Authority Inc. board;

• merit increases for Michelle Burns, Blake Campbell, Jamie Ezell, Teresa Hall, Jonathan Hardiman, Rhonda Long, Gary McNatt and Maggie Settle;

• a speed limit of 25 miles per hour for a subdivision at Monks Road and Pearl Drive west of New Cut Road in District 4;

• a $50,000 resurfacing/repaving project reimbursable by the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority on Sandy Road from a sewer pump station to Thomas Lee Hammond Road for a length of 0.4 miles and a width of 20 feet;

• a public auction for the sale of surplus and confiscated vehicles at a later date by the Sheriff’s Office.

The commission will hold a work session at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Washington Street annex.
