Burglary suspects apprehended after dogs, chopper chase

— Three Florence men who had reportedly broken into an unoccupied home on U.S. 72 West were apprehended Tuesday after authorities chased them with tracking dogs and the Limestone County sheriff’s helicopter.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said owner Thomas Ezell stopped at about 10 a.m. at the home near Clements, which was previously owned by his late parents, when he noticed a strange car in the driveway.

Then, Ezell saw someone running from the back of the house.

“Ezell fired a shot in the direction of where the person was running,” Blakely said.

The sheriff said previous thefts and burglaries had been reported at the home.

Ezell then looked into the window of the strange car and noticed glassware that had come from inside the home and coils from a heating-and-air-conditioning unit.

Blakely soon had the department’s helicopter in the air and teams with tracking dogs from Limestone Correctional Facility searched the area surrounding the home.

Two men were caught by deputies, and a third came out onto the highway at about 1:30 p.m. to turn himself in.

The men arrested and charged with third-degree burglary were: Matthew King, 31; Matthew Treadway, 38; and Joseph Daugherty, 31.

King also was wanted on two outstanding warrants from Florence for probation violation.
