— The third annual communitywide Thanksgiving dinner is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday at the Vietnam Veterans of America building at 17915 W. Elm Street. The dinner is open to anyone.

About 800 people are expected to attend and meals will also be delivered to the homebound.

Mayor Ronnie Marks and two student members of the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commission plan to volunteer alongside a few city employees and others from across the Limestone County community.

Kim Birdsong and Roxanne Haggermaker started the communitywide dinner three years ago.

“Come out,” Haggermaker said in an interview earlier this month. “We have a great time. It’s a time to fellowship, meet the neighbors and just hang out with the community.”

She said the goal is to make sure everyone is fed a warm Thanksgiving meal.
