Utilities crews responded Wednesday morning to a call on U.S. 72 East after a dump truck knocked down several lines.
Athens Utilities spokeswoman Amy Golden said they learned the truck hit a television cable line which, when it snapped, hit a neutral line that snapped also. The neutral line then hit a primary electric line, causing a fuse to blow and knock out power for approximately 15 customers in the area of 30585 U.S. 72 East, close to County Line Road.
“It was just kind of a domino effect,” Golden said.
Initial reports said a pole had also been broken, but Golden said this turned out not to be the case as crews arrived on scene.
Police were called in to direct traffic as the lines were repaired, which took about an hour and 15 minutes. Both lanes of 72 East were backed up before the scene was clear.
“They were able to fix it pretty quickly, so it wasn’t as disastrous as it sounded,” Golden said.
