News Courier carrier thwarts attempted armed robbery

A 23-year-old paper carrier thwarted an attempted armed robbery early Thursday morning at an Elkmont truck stop.

Josh Webster, a contract employee who delivers papers to The News Courier paper racks, stopped on his usual route at Pam’s Truck Stop at 25301 Elkton Road when he saw two people run into the store about 3:30 a.m.

“At the time, I thought it was two kids chasing each other,” he said.

When he pulled his car in front of the building and looked in, he saw two men inside wearing black, hooded sweatshirts and ski masks holding handguns on the clerk.

When the would-be robbers saw Webster’s car, they fled on foot.                                                                                 “One was in front of the counter and one was around the side of the counter. Both of them had guns,”Webster said.

Webster called 9-1-1 and informed the dispatcher he saw the two men head south toward Elm Street.

The clerk told Webster the men had told him they were joking before exiting the store.

Thursday’s attempted heist was not Webster’s first brush with thieves.

One morning, while dropping off papers at Publix on U.S. 72 at Lindsay Lane, a man approached him and told him he knew Webster had money. Webster declined the man’s request for cash.

Webster intends to be better prepared when he delivers papers again.

“I have a gun, now,” he said.

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident but no arrests have been made.
