Alleged shoplifter attempts escape

ATHENS — An Athens man was arrested and an Athens Police officer suffered minor injuries Monday after the man attempted to flee questioning by police, according to Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson.

Joshua Scanlan, 28, of 1104 E. Pryor St, was taken into custody Monday morning after a Wal-Mart employee observed him allegedly shoplifting, police said.

After being booked into APD headquarters, Investigator Jonathan Caldwell interviewed Scanlan about him allegedly also stealing checks and cashing them at Redstone Federal Credit Union. Caldwell left the room momentarily and Scanlan made a break for it, running down stairs and out a back door, according to police.

Officers, including Caldwell, caught Scanlan in the parking lot of the station. Officer Neal Muse fell while chasing Scanlan and suffered a minor injury, according to police.

Scanlan is facing three counts of possession of forged instruments, third degree theft and one count of third-degree escape. He was then booked into Limestone County Jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of at least $1,000 bond.
