Gill may run for Limestone commission chair

ATHENS — Longtime Athens City Councilman Jimmy Gill said Monday he is “seriously considering” running for chairman of the Limestone County Commission.

Gill told The News Courier he is considering the job because he believes the county needs to move in a different direction.

Gill, a Democrat, also said the jobs of commission chair and councillman are similar enough that he believes he could make the transition, if elected.

Gill represents Athens City Council District 3. First elected to the council in 1992, Gill currently serves as its president pro tem.

Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee and businessman Mark Yarbrough have qualified to run as Republicans.
