Athens City Council Notes

ATHENS — Athens City Council members approved an array of items during their regular meeting Monday. Here is a synopsis of action:

    • Held a public hearing and then approved a request by the Athens Rotary Club for a special events retail alcohol license so the club could sell alcoholic beverages at a Feb. 14 event at the Limestone County Event Center. There was no opposition;

    • Agreed to spend not more than $6,000 for server visualization project training;

    • Approved a $228 Electric Department travel expense;

    • Approved $16,915 in equipment for the Cemeteries, Parks and Recreation Department, which includes a lawnmower, trimmer, chainsaw, utility vehicle, desk and posting board;

    • Agreed to correct the misspelling of a street – Baltustrol Lane – in Canebrake subdivision;

    • Approved a $2,200 amendment to the “courts” line item of the fiscal 2013 budget to cover legal fees;

    • Approved a $19,269 contract with Morell Engineering for construction engineering for the resurfacing and rehabilitation of Lindsay Lane from Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road to Alabama  251. This amount is the 20 percent match required to receive the 80 percent match from the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program;

    • Approved a franchise agreement with Madison County Shuttle Inc. to allow the company to use city streets to shuttle travelers between the airport and Shoney’s restaurant  using a 12-passenger Mercedes van;

    • Awarded a $407,588 contract to Taylor Electric of Madison for construction and relocation of electric lines at Interstate 565 and County Line Road.  Athens Utilities General Manager Gary Scroggins said the state would reimburse the cost as the work is done;

    • Approved Community Consultants as grant administrator for the Trinity School project.
