— Alabama State Troopers are still investigating a Thursday morning crash on U.S. 72, five miles west of Athens, near the Glaze/Reid Road intersection that resulted in a dump truck flipped on its side and a large load of dirt spilled onto the highway.

The accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. and snarled traffic for about two hours.

Mical Morgan, a witness who lives nearby, said a truck pulling a trailer full of wood and supplies was crossing the highway to Reid Road when it was struck by a dump truck traveling eastbound. The dump truck landed on its passenger side.

“It made the trailer look like a Tinkertoy,” Morgan said.

Morgan called 911, and said a state trooper arrived within two minutes.

The driver of the dump truck, Vernard Hagood, 68, of Athens, who was wearing his seat belt, was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital where he was treated and released. The driver of the truck and trailer was not injured.
