Wet weather hampers city hall construction

— Summer rain delayed construction of the new city hall in Athens, but Public Works Director James Rich says the project is back on schedule.

“The footings and the footing stem walls are in place,” Rich said. “We had a bid that we opened and the council approved (Monday night) for Premier Structures to do the exterior masonry walls and the structural steel.”

The $2.2 million city hall project calls for a Greek Revival-style structure to be built at the old city hall location at the corner of Marion and Hobbs streets. The money has already been set aside for the project.

Premier Structures is an Athens-based general contractor that won the bid for part of the construction.

“That’s all the steelwork and the rest of the foundation structure and bricks at $400,004,” said Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks. “You’ll start seeing steel go up in the very near future.”

Marks expect city hall construction to be completed in November or December 2014, while Rich sides with a more conservative estimate of early 2015.

City Hall is temporarily located on the second floor of the Athens Utilities building on Wilkerson Street, which was renovated for city use.
