UPDATE: Athens Police investigating murder-suicide

Athens Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after the bodies of a woman and her son were found in a home.

Chief Floyd Johnson said police were notified after a UPS delivery person discovered a suicide note taped to the front door of the residence shortly after 1 p.m. today. The home is located in the 300 block of Longview Street. The neighborhood is south of U.S. 72, just inside in the western city limits of Athens.

Johnson said the names of the victims would be released pending family notification. He said it appears a 39-year-old male living in the home shot his mother, and then turned the gun on himself.

Limestone County Corner Mike West confirmed both victims had gunshot wounds to the head. Johnson said a semi-automatic pistol was used in the incident.

Both bodies were sent to the forensics lab in Huntsville for autopsies, West said.

Johnson said autopsy results would also confirm when the incident occurred.

The News Courier will have more information as it becomes available.
