APD issues scam warning

— Athens Police Department continues to receive reports from citizens who have been scammed. The most recent scams have been conducted over the phone. As a result, police issued the following reminder:

• Do not to give any personal information over the phone, by email or in Web browsers;

• Do not respond to any emails requesting personal information from any business, agency or organization, even if the sender appears to be a company you use;

• If you receive a call from a person claiming to represent your bank or any law enforcement agency, do not share your date of birth, Social Security number, account numbers or any other personal data. Your bank should already have that information on file;

• If you receive an unsolicited call from a banking institution or a law-enforcement agency claiming to be working on your behalf, visit that agency's local branch or office. A personal visit is the safest way to ensure you are not being scammed;

• If you feel you have been the victim of a financial scam, call your bank   and local law enforcement immediately.
