Historical ornament features former post office

ATHENS — Finding a stocking stuffer for a history buff might be a challenge, but the Limestone County Historical Society has a decorative solution for local holiday shoppers.

The society is selling a 24-karat, gold-finished Christmas ornament for $15 at Osborne’s Jewelers on Jefferson Street through Christmas Eve while supplies last.

The ornament is a delicately etched rendering of the U.S. Post Office building, which was in downtown Athens from 1933 to 1978. The building, known today as the Washington Street Annex, is now home to the Limestone County Commission.

“Sometimes we sell out by the middle of December, and I would be thrilled if that happened this year,” said Ellie Frost, a member of the historical society. “This is the only fundraiser we have, and we do not keep any of the profits. The profit goes towards the historic markers throughout the county, and it goes to buy books for all of the fourth-grade classes in the city and county.”

Frost said the society has 200 members nationwide and was founded in the late 1960s by Mrs. Chris Edwards, a retired teacher and historian.

“We print a quarterly publication called the Limestone Legacy strictly on the history of Athens and Limestone County,” said Frost, who edits the historical magazine sent to all LCHS members. “People will send us genealogical records, old Bible records and personal stories, and I think their roots in the county is the reason they subscribe.”

Membership to the historical society includes a subscription to Limestone Legacy. For more information, visit www.limestonecountyhistoricalsociety.org or contact Frost at 256-233-2878.
