District 1 commissioner race headed to July 15 runoff

ATHENS — The Republican race for District 1 commissioner will be decided by a runoff after Tuesday night’s primary left two of five candidates at the top of the standings.

James Shannon. 72, and Stanley Hill, 62, will face off again on July 15, with the winner advancing without Democratic opposition in the Nov. 4 general election.

Shannon received 828 votes, or 30.1 percent, followed by Hill’s 764 (27.8).

Shannon won five of the 10 boxes counted Tuesday, with 290 votes coming from the Ardmore Town Hall voting center. The 11th provisional box will be counted after Tuesday. Hill topped three boxes, receiving 206 votes cast at Elkton Road Baptist Church.

Daryl Sammet claimed two boxes and collected 624 votes, or 22.7 percent. Seth Parker tallied 384 votes, or nearly 14 percent, and Tom Combs got 150.

The District 1 commission seat is being left open by Gary Daly, who chose not to run for re-election.
