Athens’ vet Hammons tapped to lead state group

— Athens veterinarian John Hammons was recently sworn in as president of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association during the group’s annual conference on June 18-22 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

The group’s event was held in conjunction with the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, and the conference is now known as the Emerald Coast Veterinary Conference.

Veterinarians from more than 28 states attended the conference. The new ALVMA officers were installed at the ALVMA Awards Luncheon on June 19.

“The ALVMA is looking forward to serving the membership and the community in the coming year,” Hammond said. “Our board represents all practitioners in Alabama and we will continue to looks for opportunities to meet the needs of the profession and grow the Association.”

New officers sworn are: President John Hammons, DVM of Athens; President-elect T. C. Branch, DVM of Birmingham; Vice President Harold Pate, DVM of Lowndesboro; Treasurer Winston Pirtle, DVM of Montgomery; Board Member at Large Charles Ashwander of Decatur and AVMA Delegate Jan Strother, DVM of Hartselle. Bill Bledsoe, DVM of Camden will serve as immediate past president.

The ALVMA seeks to raise public awareness about general pet health care and focuses on the ways preventive care can be cost-effective and increase the length and quality of the life of your pet. Additionally, there are topics like disaster preparedness, dog bite prevention and poison prevention that the ALVMA promotes throughout the year.

The ALVMA is the oldest and largest professional veterinary association in the state of Alabama and is nationally recognized as one of the most active. Founded in 1907, The Alabama Veterinary Medical Association is comprised of approximately 725 veterinarians from around the state.
