Brooks: Obama's plan is too costly

Immigration crisis in Texas

— President Barack Obama on Friday pushed Congress to pass a bill that would provide $3.7 billion to deal with tens of thousands of unaccompanied children who have turned up at the U.S.-Mexico border.

House Republicans mostly balked at the proposal, claiming it was too much money to deal with the crisis. Another House Republican, Rep. Mo Brooks, R-5th, echoed those same sentiments Friday as he called on Obama to enforce the U.S. immigration law and not throw more money at the growing crisis.

“It would help if he would quit paying illegal aliens taxpayer money to come to America in the form of free clothing, free shelter, free entertainment, free health care, free transportation and billions of dollars a year in fraudulent tax refunds,” Brooks said. “If you take away the sweeteners, (immigrants) would be less likely to take up residence here.”

As of Friday, about 57,000 children from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala had crossed into the U.S. since October. A U.S. law passed in 2008 to combat human trafficking is likely contributing to the growing crisis.

The law ensures court hearings for the children, and often allows them to stay in the country for years while waiting for their court date. However, the children may become lost in the legal system and never show up for court because of a backlogged immigration court system.

Brooks said Obama’s $3.7 billion plan to solve the crisis is “an insult to hardworking American families who have to foot the bill.” He said it would cost only about $25 million to fly the children back to their home countries.

“The American people need to understand the difference in which the phrase ‘immigration reform’ is being used,” he said. “To me, and the people of the Tennessee Valley, immigration reform means securing the border and stopping illegal conduct. To the president, his political allies and pro-amnesty forces, ‘immigration reform’ means legalizing what is illegal conduct.”

In a speech in the U.S. House on Thursday, Brooks also criticized Obama for having evicted 649,00 illegal immigrants in 2012. He pointed out that President Bill Clinton’s eviction of 1.3 million illegal immigrants in 1993 was 98 percent better than Obama’s rate, and President George W. Bush’s eviction of 1.2 million illegal immigrants in 2008 was 80 percent better than Obama’s rate.

“Lack of money did not create America’s porous border problem,” Brooks said while speaking to Congress. “Incompetent border policy did.”
