Midday outage affects 16,000 Athens Utilities customers

— Faulty Tennessee Valley Authority equipment caused a midday power outage Wednesday affecting some 16,000 Athens Utilities customers.

TVA is investigating the cause of the outage that started just before 11 a.m. and lasted about 22 minutes, said TVA spokesman Duncan Mansfield.

The equipment failure caused a main Athens Utilities substation at Peach Orchard to go down, impacting three substations it feeds at Belle Mina, French's Mill and Athens District, city spokeswoman Holly Hollman said.

Athens Utilities found no problems with its equipment, she said.

Mansfield said he did not know how long the investigation would take.
