State school board OKs revised Common Core standards

MONTGOMERY —

The Alabama State Board of Education today approved revised standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts based on feedback from Alabama classroom teachers and a review by the original Courses of Study Committee members who recommended the standards in 2010. This comes as part of the approved Alabama process of continual review of standards rather than the outdated process of review every six to seven years.

The newly adopted 2013 Revised College- and Career-Ready Standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts reflect the move of standards between courses at the high school level to better address the learning needs of Alabama students as they are prepared to meet the expectations of the state’s community colleges, institutions of higher education and business and industry.

The revisions also include the newly adopted graduation requirements for Alabama students and suggested math progressions that negate the misinformation that Algebra I can only be taught in the ninth grade or higher. In reality, Alabama’s math courses are not grade-specific and should be taught based on the individual math needs of each student.

In the area of English/Language Arts, standards that require repetition across grades for expanded application were added. Also, Appendix B, which included suggested exemplars, has been deleted. It was not a required reading list and samples of exemplars are available from multiple sources for use by teachers in Alabama classrooms.
