Store employee accused of stealing, using forgotten credit card

ATHENS — An Athens convenience-store employee has been arrested for allegedly using a credit card accidentally left by a customer, an official said.

Athens Police on Thursday arrested Melanie Freeman Jarrett, 42, of 21647 Ashley Brooke Way, Elkmont, on a charge of fraudulent use of a credit card, Chief Floyd Johnson said.

On Wednesday, the credit card owner reported to police that her credit card had been used at K&J Quick Stop on Elm Street without her knowledge, Johnson said.

“The victim told officers she had used her card at K&J on Dec. 10, 2013, and accidentally left the card there,” the chief said. “When she returned to the store, the card was nowhere to be found.”

The card owner had been notified earlier Wednesday that her card had been used at K&J, so she returned to the store to speak to the manager, Johnson said. The manager told the cardholder she had found the card and had put it away in the event the cardholder returned to claim it, the chief said. The manager later notified the cardholder that she had learned who had used the card — an employee at the store who was identified as Jarrett, Johnson said.

Sgt. Johnny Campbell interviewed Jarrett Thursday and arrested her in connection with the crime.

Jarrett was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where she was released after posting bail of $2,500, records show.
