Girl, 12, told Limestone teacher of alleged sexual abuse

By Jean Cole

— A 12-year-old girl recently told a Limestone schoolteacher she had been sexually abused, leading to the arrest of an Athens man on a felony sexual abuse charge, an official said.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Stinnett said the girl told the teacher about the abuse, which the girl said occurred about a year ago, and the teacher reported the incident to authorities. The Sheriff’s Department, Department of Human Resources and Children’s Advocacy Center were all notified, Stinnett said.

Following an investigation, a sheriff’s investigator arrested Michael Gordon Scarboro, 53, of 205 S. Lindsay Lane, on a charge of sexual abuse of a child under age 12 in connection with the abuse, records show.

He was released from the Limestone County Jail about 11/2 hours after his arrest after securing a $25,000 bond, records show.
