Athens school board notes

— Athens school board members accepted two retirements and agreed to hire a new special education teacher during their meeting Monday. Board President Russell Johnson, Vice President Beverly Malone and board members David McPherson, Jennifer Manville, James Lucas, Chris Paysinger and Tim Green were present. Here is a synopsis:

• Approved the retirement of Pam Blacklidge, secretary to Superintendent Trey Holladay;

• Approved the retirement of Derek Pirtle, assistant girls soccer coach at Athens High School;

• Agreed to hire Leslie Wigginton Schnars as special education teacher at Athens Middle School;

• Approved a list of volunteers for Athens Middle and Athens High.
