Troopers warn Alabamians to call, check online before traveling

— Alabama state troopers and transportation officials are urging Alabamians to call or check online before traveling today and Wednesday.

Winter storm forecasts for parts of the state have made some roads snowy and icy.

The Alabama Department of Public Safety and the Alabama Department of Transportation encourage all motorists to drive with extreme caution and to avoid roads when conditions are hazardous, particularly early in the morning as bridges may have icy patches.

To check the condition of state roads and federal highways before traveling, go online to http://www.dot.state.al.us. Motorists can also check ALDOT’s traffic information and cameras page for more information on delays, construction and other highway conditions.

Mobilized

ALDOT has mobilized personnel and resources across the state to respond to icy bridges and roadways and other weather issues. The department will monitor road conditions and make every attempt to keep highways passable and as safe for travel as possible.

Call, move over

To report traffic crashes or other emergencies to state troopers, motorists with cellphones may dial *HP (*47) toll free.

If driving becomes necessary, motorists should use caution and remain alert for work zones, maintenance workers and emergency vehicles. Motorists also are reminded to obey Alabama’s “Move Over” law.
