Athens man charged in burglary, gun theft

— An Athens man accused of breaking into a home and stealing a rifle, a handgun and ammunition magazines is also facing charges of marijuana and paraphernalia possession, according to Athens Police Department.

Chief Floyd Johnson said a burglary was reported Sunday afternoon at a home on Florence Street and that a Smith & Wesson brand rifle, a Glock brand pistol and magazines were found missing.

On Monday evening, the victim contacted Investigator Tim McIntire and told him about a possible suspect in the case, and McIntire advised patrol officers of the suspect and the car he might be in, the chief said.

Later Monday evening, Officer Mac McWhorter saw the car in question on Market Street near Elm Street, and he stopped the car on Sneed Road, Johnson said. McWhorter arrested the suspect, Joshua Alexander McKinney, 24, of 12162 Elk River Mills Road, Athens, on outstanding misdemeanor warrants, the chief said.

In the car, McWhorter found the Glock brand pistol stolen from the Florence Street residence as well as marijuana oil, a marijuana cigarette, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia, Johnson said.

McKinney was charged Tuesday with third-degree burglary, second-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a pistol without the requisite permit.

He was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $5,250, records show.
