Elkmont wife accused of sending drug to jailed husband

— An Elkmont couple is facing criminal charges after the wife allegedly mailed an opioid painkiller to the husband while he was held in the Limestone County Jail, an official said.

On Feb. 3, jail authorities learned that prisoner Justin Lee Swanner, 33, of 24985 Esten Lane, was going to receive a letter containing a sublingual strip of the drug Suboxone, said Limestone County Sheriff’s Capt. Stanley McNatt. A Suboxone strip, which is used to treat opioid dependence, is placed under the tongue, where it dissolves and enters the blood stream.

“Based on the information, a corrections officer inspected the mail and found a letter that was addressed to Justin Swanner and contained a Suboxone strip concealed within the envelope,” McNatt said.

The evidence was turned over to a narcotics investigator who developed as a suspect Angela Nicole Barron Swanner, 35, of 25022 Elkton Road, he said. She was arrested on charges of distribution of a controlled substance and second-degree promoting prison contraband, records show. After posting bail of $15,000 on the charges, she was released from the Limestone County Jail.

Justin was charged with attempting to promote prison contraband, with bail set at $1,000. However, Justin was already in jail for violating probation on a previous charge of promoting prison contraband and was awaiting trial on whether his probation would be revoked on that charge.
