More pleasant weather expected for weekend

— The winter weather system that moved through here left up to 5 inches of snow in parts of Limestone County, according to the National Weather Service’s Huntsville office.

“Southeast Limestone County and some isolated spots received about 4 to 5 inches,” said Kurt Weber, a meteorologist with the Huntsville office. “There was a broad area that received around 2 inches and the central part of the county had 3 to 4 inches.

“East of Athens, toward Madison, it dropped off at 2 to 3 inches.”

Weber said the southern part of the county near the Morgan County line could have received about 5-7 inches.  He said Pisgah in Jackson County had about 8 ½ inches and there were “a few locally higher amounts near Cullman and southeast Morgan County.”

Law enforcement and emergency workers were busy during the early evening hours Wednesday answering calls for wrecks throughout the county. Thursday morning, they were at Exit 365 on Interstate 65 near Ardmore for a truck wreck that stopped southbound traffic and slowed northbound traffic.

There were also some spotty power outages through the night, and Athens Utilities crews were at work Thursday morning trying to restore power to about 700 customers.

The weather is expected to be much more pleasant this weekend, with partly sunny skies and highs in the 50s. Weber said temperatures could reach the 60s next week.
