Annual Chili Challenge and Silent Auction this Saturday in Athens

Amanda Speegle couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming weekend.

She is anticipating the 26th annual Chili Challenge and Silent Auction.

The event, sponsored by Hospice of Limestone County, will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at Athens High School.

“So many people have worked so hard to prepare for it,” Speegle, who serves as the Chili Challenge Chairman, said. “We’ve gotten lots of great donations (for the silent auction), including a ‘no initiation fee’ for a full golf membership at Canebrake Club. It’s about a $5,000 value.”

Exactly 32 chili challengers are ready and willing to cook up a pot of chili for the event and participants are ready to taste as much chili as they care to eat.

Events include free chili samples and lunch, children’s activities, musical entertainment, a bake sale and a nine category silent auction, all manned by a team of more than 200 volunteers.

“The challenger list is full, all of our entertainers are lined up and the day is shaping up to be another success,” Speegle said.

The Chili Challenge and Silent Auction supports Hospice of Limestone County — a nonprofit agency — that provides services for families dealing with the death of a loved one and Camp Hope, a bereavement camp for children. The event is the agency’s largest fundraiser. About $50,000 is raised each year.

Tickets (lunch included) are $10 for anyone age 10 or above and are available at the Hospice of Limestone County office or from any staff or board member. Tickets will also be sold at the door on Saturday. Food will be served at 11 a.m. The silent auction ends at 1:30 p.m.

Speegle said a van, donated by the Limestone County District Attorney’s Office, would be on-site assisting with transportation from the parking lot to the front door. The Lion’s Club will also provide free train rides for children — weather permitting.

“Please make plans to join us this Saturday anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” Speegle said. “It’s a great time for an even greater cause.”
