No school Thursday at Lindsay Lane east following fire call

The east campus of Lindsay Lane Christian Academy is closed today after a heating and cooling unit overheated Wednesday causing minor smoke damage and triggering the evacuation of students and staff.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. at the campus at 13902 Bradford Road in eastern Limestone County, which includes 79 students in kindergarten through first grade, said Lindsay Lane Christian Academy Headmaster Stephen Murr.

“It happened just as the students were settling in,” he said, “A student noticed the smoke and notified the teacher.”

Students were evacuated and a bus was sent from the main campus on Lindsay Lane in Athens to collect them, Murr said.

No one was injured.

Smoke from the unit entered the building through the heating and air-conditioning system, so the school will be closed today so it can be cleaned, the headmaster said.

Possible fan motor

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

“Possibly a fan motor overheated,” Murr said.

East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call. Athens Fire & Rescue assisted them.

“Within a short amount of time we had several firefighters and trucks here,” Murr said. “A big credit to them for responding so quickly. You never want something like this to happen but the students evacuated according to plan and the firefighters arrived quickly.”

Initial confusion

Initial media reports of a fire at Lindsay Lane failed to specify the fire occurred at the east campus on Bradford Road. (There are three campuses, including the main campus on Lindsay Lane and the west campus on Sanderfer Road in Athens.) This prompted some confusion among parents, who called the schools to find out about their children.
