Parents can apply for Angel Tree gifts for children beginning Sept. 27

— Parents who need help to buy Christmas gifts for their children may apply next week for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

Under the program, volunteers select a paper ornament from one of the Angel Trees at various stores throughout the Tennessee Valley. Each ornament lists the name of a needy child and his or her clothing size or gift wish. Volunteers buy the gift and return it to the store where they obtained the ornament. The gifts are distributed to the needy children before Christmas.

Needy parents may apply for the program between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, through Friday, Oct. 1, at First Presbyterian Church in Athens. The church is located across from the Limestone County Courthouse at the corner of Jefferson and Washington Streets.

Parents must provide the following information for the application:

• Social Security numbers for everyone in the family

• Photo ID

• Proof of income, including food stamps

• Proof of bills from this month

• Birth certificates for children age 12 and under; no copies

For more information about the Angel Tree program, call the Salvation Army in Decatur at (256) 353-2822.
