— Huntsville Police Monday evening arrested a man accused of stealing a pickup truck from an Athens gas station Sunday.

Officials said the suspect, Steven Michael Lewter, 34, removed an 11-year-old child from the pickup truck at U.S. 72 and Cloverleaf Drive before leaving the scene.

“Steven Lewter is in custody, and HPD did arrest him,” said Athens police Capt. Trevor Harris. “We don’t know (as of press time Monday) if HPD has charges of their own, or if he’ll be transferred to us, because it is still developing.”

Harris said Lewter would be transferred to Athens if he does not face charges in Huntsville.

The child was unharmed, but authorities say they believe that Lewter, who is listed as homeless, might have been on his way to Florida.

As of press time Monday, Harris said he could not confirm if the yellow 2001 Ford Ranger Edge with a University of Alabama sticker in the back window and Alabama license plate 47W34L5, had been recovered.

Anyone with information about the stolen truck should contact Athens Police at 256-233-8700.
