Man accused of lifting lost wallet

An Athens man accused of stealing a wallet left at a local business has been charged with second-degree theft.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said his office received a report Saturday from a man who had accidentally left his wallet at a business off U.S. 72 West. When he returned, the wallet was gone.

“The owner of the business contacted us Sunday to say a videocamera in the business recorded the person who had taken the wallet,” the sheriff said.

Investigators identified the person on the tape as Timothy Lance Collins, 28, of 15413 Zehner Road, Lot 12, the sheriff said.

“Officers picked him up and determined he was on the video,” Blakely said. “He admitted taking the money and a Visa card from the wallet and throwing the wallet away. He still had the Visa card hidden at his house.”

Collins is charged with second-degree theft, which is a Class C felony involving the theft of more than $500 but less than $2,500. The sheriff did not know exactly how much cash the wallet contained.

Collins was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting bail of $2,500.
