UPDATE: 3-vehicle wreck on U.S. 72 injures 2

— A three-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 72 and French Farms Boulevard injured two people and blocked eastbound traffic on 72 for approximately 45 minutes in front of the Athens Walmart.

The accident, which was reported at 3:40 p.m., involved a taupe 2011 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, a white 2006 Dodge Dakota pickup truck and a black 2002 Mercedes C240 sedan.

The impact from the collision mangled the driver’s side of the Toyota. The female driver of the Mercedes pulled into an adjacent parking lot with minor damage to her vehicle.

The driver of the Dodge truck, Andrew Burnside, 42, of Mayo, Fla., was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to emergency officials.

Officials said that two people involved in the accident received treatment at the hospital, but only Burnside was transported by ambulance from the scene.

“Apparently, (Burnside) was westbound on Highway 72 in front of Walmart and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck two different vehicles eastbound on 72 in between Zaxby’s and Walmart,” said Athens Police Capt. Trevor Harris.

Harris said it unknown at this time what caused Burnside to leave the eastbound lane and veer into westbound traffic.

“There were no skid marks pre-impact as observed by officers that investigated,” Harris said. “As of this time, the investigation doesn’t shed any light on what caused the wreck or what caused him to veer into oncoming traffic.”

Athens Police declined to identify the female drivers of the Toyota and Mercedes, both of whom are Limestone County residents. Harris said both drivers are classified as accident victims.

Burnside was not listed as a patient on Monday afternoon, meaning he was either discharged or transferred, said a spokeswoman for ALH. There was no listing for Burnside at Huntsville Hospital on Monday.

Athens Fire and Rescue, Athens Police and Athens-Limestone EMS responded to the scene.
