Man is charged after saying he's 'roadside homicide investigator'

— Athens Police Department received a call from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department about 1:15 a.m. Monday about a person at the Waffle House on U.S. 72 East impersonating a police officer, Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said.

“Officers later learned there had been a car in the parking lot of Waffle House doing doughnuts, when another car entered the parking lot and turned on red and blue lights,” Johnson said. “The driver of the car with the red and blue lights exited his car, talked with the driver of the first car and identified himself as a ‘narcotics officer with the state of Alabama.’

The driver then went into the Waffle House and pulled out a star-shaped badge and identified himself as a ‘roadside homicide investigator.’

Johnson said the man ordered a meal and ate. Witnesses said he left when Limestone County Deputy Josh McLaughlin came in the dining room.

“A short time later, staff and customers told McLaughlin what had occurred,” Johnson said. “McLaughlin had a BOLO put out for the vehicle and the person who had identified himself as a police officer.”

Officer Jeff Gentilcore and Sgt. Jason Threet found the vehicle on Airport Road. Officers then located Doug Bevil.

“Bevil told officers he is a ‘deputy coroner with the Walker County coroner’s office,’” Johnson said. “Bevil told officers he only identified himself as a deputy coroner.”

Bevil also denied using any red or blue lights, Johnson said.

After talking with witnesses and viewing a videotape, Bevil was charged with impersonating a police officer.
