Mom of son sentenced in school shooting reaches plea agreement

— The Madison mother charged with attempting to help her son escape a murder charge has reached a plea agreement, according to court records.

Safia Memon, 40, was charged with first-degree hindering prosecution, a Class C felony punishable by one to 10 years in prison. She was arrested April 13, 2012, at a Dallas bus station with her son, Hammad Memon.

Robert “Bob” Becher, chief trial attorney for the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, Safia Memon and her attorney Corrie Collins, and Circuit Judge William “Billy” Bell each signed the plea agreement Monday, records show.

The agreement allowed the mother of four to plead guilty to hindering prosecution. She is serving a “confined sentence,” or suspended sentence with 364 days’ probation and must pay $6,985 in court costs and restitution. Memon must meet all requirements of her plea deal, or her probation could be revoked.

Hammad Memon, 17, pleaded guilty, May 28, to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison after shooting his ninth-grade classmate, Todd Brown, in the head at Discovery Middle School on Feb. 5, 2010. Both students were 14 at the time of the shooting.

Athens pediatrician Dr. Iqbal Memon, 51, was also charged with first-degree hindering prosecution after authorities said he misled them when Hammad attempted to leave the country two months before his trial was scheduled to begin June 17, 2012.

According to court records, the doctor has not reached a plea deal. His trial before Madison County Circuit Judge Donna Pate is scheduled for Aug. 5.

Attempts to reach Becher and Corrie Collins, Safia’s attorney, were unsuccessful Tuesday.
