Five finalists chosen for Elkmont High principal vacancy

— The principal vacancy at Elkmont High School could be filled during Tuesday’s Limestone County Board of Education meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk reviewed 60 applications. Sisk and Elkmont Mayor Tracy Compton interviewed 11 candidates Monday and Tuesday. After the field was narrowed to five finalists, an employee panel from Elkmont conducted interviews Thursday.

Sisk is expected to make a recommendation during the school board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Clinton Street annex. If the board approves his final selection, the superintendent would negotiate a contract subject to board approval.

The statewide search to replace Elkmont principal Stan Davis, who retired May 31, includes two local contenders and three from outside the Limestone system.

The local finalists are Elkmont teacher and basketball coach Garth Garris, who has a master’s degree, and Piney Chapel Elementary School principal William “Bill” Hardyman, who has a master’s degree and education specialist degree.

Two of the outside candidates currently work for a school system in a neighboring county. Johnny Berry, who has two master’s degrees and an education specialist degree, is the guidance counselor and director of athletics for Hartselle High School in Morgan County. Elkmont native Dr. Travis Schrimsher Jr., who also has a master’s degree, is one of three assistant principals at James Clemens High School for Madison City Schools.

The third outside candidate, Dr. Hunteria Nelson, teaches seventh-grade math at Denton Middle School in Mobile County and also has a master’s degree and a law degree.
