Local runner reflects on Boston Marathon experience

— Caitlin Milford said if Monday’s bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon was intended to dampen the American spirit or intimidate the runners, then the two explosions failed on both accounts.

The bombing on Boylston Street and the surrounding area that was described as “an act of terror” by President Barack Obama killed three people and injured at least 176.

“I definitely plan to run next year if I can qualify again this summer, almost because of what happened,” Milford said Wednesday in between nursing school classes. “They can’t keep us down, and we’re not afraid to go back to Boston. I was talking to some other runners, and we were saying that marathoners are the wrong group to tangle with because we train to endure suffering and pain.”

Both Milford and her stepfather, Kevin Morse of Jamestown, N.Y., were unharmed. Milford’s mother, Jennifer Morse, told The (Jamestown) Post-Journal Wednesday that Kevin Morse was about a half-mile from the finish line as a spectator and had taken photos of Caitlin as she neared the finish.
