UPDATE: Monday accident injures 2

Authorities say injuries 'non-life threatening'

— A late-morning accident Monday on U.S. 72 near D&J Motors caused two people to be transported by ambulance to Athens-Limestone Hospital with injuries described as “non-life threatening” by emergency officials.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said Andrew J. Horton of Athens, the driver and lone occupant of a 2003 Dodge Caravan, was headed east on U.S. 72 in between Jefferson and Clinton streets when he apparently turned left in front of a westbound 2006 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Tonya H. Burnett of Athens at 11:09 a.m.

“The Dodge was going east and turned left in front of the Chrysler going west in front of D&J Motors, and (two people) were hurt,” Johnson said. “The vehicle apparently turned left in front of the other without yielding right of way.”

First responders with Athens Fire and Rescue Station No. 1 said both vehicles incurred damage from the side impact of the collision, and that two people — Horton and the lone passenger of the Chrysler — were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

The name of the passenger was not immediately available and multiple attempts for condition updates for Horton and Burnett’s passenger were unsuccessful Monday.

Dispatchers reported an airbag deployed in one of the vehicles. Johnson said Burnett was wearing a seat belt, and said it was unknown whether Horton was wearing his seat belt.
