Counterfeit money: APD urges vigilance during holiday season

— Athens merchants that deal in cash should be on guard as several business owners have filed police reports over potentially counterfeit bills.

Police Chief Floyd Johnson said reports of a suspicious $50 bill, $20 bill and $1 bill had been made “over the last few days” because business owners noted the bills did not look right or feel right.

“We get calls on counterfeit money, and half (the bills) are good and half aren’t,” he said, adding that bill markers are not always 100 percent accurate. “With new bills, you really have to look closely to see if they’re good or not.”

The department primarily receives calls on everything from $1 bills to $100 bills, Johnson said, and each is investigated on a case-by-case basis. He said Tuesday there is no large investigation ongoing, but added that shopkeepers should be vigilant.

“‘Tis the season,” he said.
