Alabama Shakes headed to the Grammys

Athens —  

Indie music stars and Athens natives, the Alabama Shakes, have been nominated for best new artist and best rock performance for their smash hit “Hold On.”

Yesterday, Rolling Stone magazine named “Hold On” its song of the year for 2012.

Who could've imagined, last [D]ecember? Not us,” the band wrote about the Rolling Stone honor on its Facebook page. “We sincerely appreciate it, and all of you!!”

The Grammy considerations are just the cherry on top of a meteoric rise to worldwide acclaim since the band released some early tracks in 2011. Since then, there have been television appearances galore, a full album, titled “Boys & Girls,” released earlier this year, and a world-over tour.

Band members are Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell, Steve Johnson and Ben Tanner. Howard, Fogg and Cockrell graduated from East Limestone High School, Johnson graduated from Elkmont High School and Tanner graduated from Muscle Shoals High School.

The Grammys will be presented at 7 p.m., Feb. 10, on CBS. The Alabama Shakes are also nominated for a technical award.
