NAACP welcomes MLK essay entries

— The Limestone County chapter of the NAACP is inviting local students to participate in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday essay contest.

Eligible participants must attend school in Athens or Limestone County, and categories are divided as follows: ages 6-12; ages 13-15; and ages 16-18.

The theme of this year’s contest is “A Decision Today, Impacting Tomorrow.” Essays should focus on what decision made by an individual, church, city, school or national leader would make America stronger.

Essays should be no more than one page in length and be legibly hand-written. Counselors and parents may assist students, but it should be the students’ words and thoughts. Essays will be judged on clarity, grammar and development of the theme based on the age of the writer.

Essays, which should include the writer’s name and phone number, must be received by Jan. 8. They should be mailed to Limestone County NAACP, P.O. Box 1071, Athens, AL 35612 or be delivered to Vicki Dowd in Mayor Ronnie Marks’ office by the deadline.

First, second and third-place winners in each category will receive a savings bond, and winners in each category will read their essays at the annual MLK holiday program on Jan. 21.

Students who have questions or need more information may contact the mayor’s office at 256-233-8730 or Benard Simelton at 256-426-6406 or 256-216-5668.
